179's Response to the Covid-19 Pandemic

179 At Meetings

Troop and Crew 179 hasn't missed a meeting yet this year. On March 24, 2020 the Michigan Governor instituted a "Stay at Home" order for all citizens with the exception of critical infrastructure workers. By March 31, 2020 179 was holding online meetings using ZOOM. Michigan Crossroads Council then contacted Scoutmaster Chuck Williams to learn about how we did it, then released the 179 plan to all Packs, Troops, and Crews.

When the State started to open the Michigan Crossroads Council released S.A.F.E. with guidelines for in-person Scouting. 179 was the first to implement the MCC plan and start meeting face to face.

As we now move into the Fall 179 has created a hybrid program where some meetings each month will be live and outdoors, the majority will continue online with ZOOM. Our plans are to continue this until all restrictions are lifted.

179 Scout and Venturing Advancement

During this crisis most of 179 Scouts and Venturers took advantage of the extra time they had and put it towards advancement. In fact 2020 has been our biggest year for advancement with 68 youth earning 263 badges.

179 At Camps

Troop and Crew 179 again lead the way for the rest of the Packs, Troops, and Crews by being the first Scout group in Michigan to implement the Michigan Crossroads Council S.A.F.E. guidelines and head to the woods to go camping.

Most of Scouting happens out at camp so we have made it a priority. In fact, 179 has held more camps in 2020 than we did in 2019. Since the June ease in restrictions 179 has had three camps!

  1. Weekend Camp at Kensington Metro Park in Milford, Michigan. We spent the weekend getting use to the new requirements and canoeing the Huron River.
  2. Summer Camp was a five day camp in Island Lake Recreation Area. We worked on Merit Badges and skills training during the day. Each night saw a different activity from Campfires to Skill Games to Swimming.
  3. Family Camp was a weekend at Straits State Park in St. Ignace, Michigan. 25 families made the trip to the Upper Peninsula and spent the day on Mackinac Island. We toured Fort Mackinac, biked the island, shopped the town, and ate the fudge.

Michigan Crossroads Council SAFE Scouting Guidelines

The SAFE Restart Scouting Guidelines suggests that where practical, Scouts are placed 'one to a tent' or with other family members.

The SAFE Restart Scouting Guidelines strongly suggests that each Scout be transported to and from campouts by a family member.

The SAFE Restart Scouting Guidelines requires Troop 179 to collect and hold in record the following forms:

•  Health Form (Parts A & B) -needed once per year. A Doctor's signature is not needed for Health Forms Part A & B.

•  Supplemental Medical Permission Form for medically vulnerable youth and/or adults -needed once per year.

•  Youth Release & Waiver and/or Adult Release & Waiver  -needed once per year.

•  COVID-19 Symptom Screening Form  -needed for each "in-person" Troop Meeting and each campout. Fill out a form for each participant on the day the campout begins, and send with the participant.

You may fill out the above forms online and save them to your computer. Then please email them to t179transportation@gmail.com using this link. (Please add the Scout or Scouter's name to the subject line of your email).  Alternatively, you can print the forms, and bring them to a meeting or camp with the participant. Webelos leaders may want to collect their forms and send to Troop 179 to make check in faster.

If your Scout arrives at a meeting or camp without a current Heath Form (Parts A & B) on file, and a Youth Release & Waiver Form on file, their parent will be required to immediately submit the form in person, or the Scout will be sent home.

If you have a question, comment, or suggestion, please e-mail: Chuck Williams
