Dear Scouts, Parents, and Leaders
Let’s get ready for our Summer Adventures!
Meetings at the Presbyterian Church – We will hold all of our meetings outside in the First Presbyterian Church Parking Lot from now until later this fall. If a particular Tuesday has bad weather, Scoutmaster Chuck Williams will send an email out at 5:00 pm to let you know if we will continue on that night to meet outdoors or if we will switch to ZOOM instead. We are able to get much more Scouting done when meeting live. All meetings will start at 7:15 pm and end around 8:45. Our meeting schedule for the next few months:
179 Amazing Adventures
JUNE 27 - JULY 3, 2021 EDWARD N. COLE CANOE BASE SILVER CREEK CAMPSITE
Dear Scouts Parents and Leaders:
I’m writing today to discuss Summer Camp at Cole Canoe Base on June 27 thru July 3, 2021. Every member of 179 should make plans to attend Summer Camp each year. A Scout or Venturer grows more in Scouting this one week than any other event throughout the year. I plan on everyone being there, so if for some reason you’re not able to make it please reply back and let me know. Registration is happening now. The cost is $375.00 for the week. There is a $25.00 late fee if not registered by May 1, 2021. There are scholarships available to help families that are struggling, we want everyone to go, contact me to hear more about these scholarships.
Here is the list of who is going so far:
We are in the process of working with the Scouts and Venturers to schedule their week at camp. You can download the Program Sign-up Form to see what is available and start deciding what you would like to do. Scouts that are Tenderfoot or Scout Ranks will follow the “Camp Tenderfoot” schedule and do not need to fill out this form.
Cole Canoe Base Merit Badges: On the Program Schedule, at the top there are the Cole Merit Badges. Covid Protocols for their Merit Badges are asking that within each patrol the Scouts/Venturers form into “PODS”. A POD has 3 or more Scouts/Venturers that are all taking the same Cole Merit Badges. The PODS allow for any requirement that takes two Scouts/Venturers to work together, our Scouts will have someone from their patrol to work with instead of someone from another troop to minimize contact with people outside our troop. Of course, there will be distancing and face coverings at all times. Each 179 Scout or Venturer will need to find at least two others from their patrol to do Cole Merit Badges with them.
Troop 179 & Venturing Activities: These activities (Merit Badges & Skills Training) will take place in our campsite and will only include people from our troop so no PODS are needed and you can sign up to take anything separate of what other patrol members are doing.
Program Sign-up Form: When filling out the form you will fill out the Cole Merit Badges in the first section and list the others in your POD. Then there is a section for the 179 Activities you would like to take. A few things to remember:
HEALTH FORMS
Current Health Forms must be filled out (they expire annually) which includes Parts A, B & C (part C requires an exam by a health professional. Most of our members need a new Part C and many haven’t turned in Parts A & B since last year. I have been talking about this since January and now is a good time to schedule a physical exam with what ever health professional you use. These Forms are required.
Thanks for your attention to this email and I am looking forward to a great week at Cole Canoe Base!

179 SPRING HIKING CAMP May 14, 15, & 16, 2021 Highland Recreation Area
At this outdoor camp we are at Highland Recreation Area's Teeple Hill Group Camp, We will spend the weekend hiking and backpacking the many trails of Highland Recreation Area. We will work on several of the Chief Pontiac Trail's Hiking Programs, including a Brave Hike and a full Credential Trail (17 mile) Back Pack Hike. New Scout will work on Second & First Class Hiking Requirements. Should be a weekend of Great Hiking and Camping Fun.
The Venturers and Philmont Crew will be on the long hike, as opposed to the Winter or Canoe variants, and a new trail that most of us have never done before. The Venturers will be classified as an Order of the Arrow hike While the Philmont Crew will be classified as a regular hike. This means Venturers pre hike is required to be 300 words on the Ottawa Nation and the Philmont hikers report must be on Chief Pontiac. If you don't wish to get a medal, please let Mr. Schultz (Venturers) or Mr. Imel (Philmont) know so they won't keep asking for reports.
The formatting is quite specific and the details can be found on this checklist: https://chiefpontiacprograms.org/pdf/CPT_Essay_Checklist.pdf
In order to make it easier to meet the requirements, use these Google Doc templates. Edit the Google Doc name and header to match your details. For the OA Hike use: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1rzshur5I7rYHnXI2cIzJF8YoLpXkb7VP2NTR_8QSiX8/edit?usp=sharing
Share them on Google Docs to Mr. Schultz and Mr. Imel with them as a commenter.

Family Rifle River Canoe Trek & Venture Gauntlet June 4, 5, & 6, 2021 Cole Canoe Base, Alger, Michigan
Our Annual Canoe Trek is always a favorite of Scouts, Leaders and Parents. We travel to Cole Canoe Base in Alger, Michigan (just south of West Branch off I-75). We camp in tents and patrols do their own cooking for the weekend. Parents & Siblings camp and eat with the GOATs.
Adults are needed in great numbers this weekend; with all the new Scouts this spring we will need adults (leaders and parents) to help them with their first aquatic activity. BSA and Troop Procedures are greatly in effect for the weekend due to the inherent risk of being on moving water. A short synopsis of these are:
We need many adults on the trip to cover the number of Scouts in Canoes, parents please consider coming if you have experience canoeing.
SWIM TESTING: Each year every Scout and Adult must take a swim test so that as we do activities in the water our Aquatics committee has a good idea as to the Scouts ability in the water. We are working hard to find a pool to support testing, otherwise we will do swim tests at Cole Canoe Base in the lake.

ABOUT NYLT
Leadership training is perhaps the most important opportunity available to our Scouts and Venturers. National Youth Leadership Training is a key part of the leadership development of the BSA’s youth members. NYLT is an intense, six-day experience centered on the concepts of what a leader should BE, what a leader should KNOW, and what a leader should DO.
