PAST 179 HIGH ADVENTURE TRIPS

Philmont Scout Ranch, (1971, 1981, 1985, 1988, 1992, 1996, 2002, 2008, 2011, 2015, 2019, 2021, 2024) the Boy Scouts of America's premier High Adventure™ base, challenges Scouts and Venturers with more than 214 square miles of rugged northern New Mexico wilderness. Backpacking treks, horseback cavalcades, and training and service programs offer young people many ways to experience this legendary country. There is no surprise that we have been to Philmont more than any other trip. For most Scouts Philmont is on their bucket list of Scouting things to do.

Florida Sea Base (1998, 2006, 2009, 2013, 2018, 2022) is located in Islamorada and on Summerland Key in the beautiful Florida Keys, as well as Marsh Harbour, Great Abaco Island, Bahamas, the near shore reefs and crystal clear waters offer unparalleled opportunities for long term and short term programs year round. Troop 179 has taken advantage of a different program each time we've been. Starting in 1998 with a Sailing Adventure utilizing a 75 foot Keys Tall Ship. In 2006 it was the Bahamas Sailing Adventure; 2009 the Coral Reef Adventure; 2013 survival at the Out Island Adventure and in 2018 we did the Scuba Adventure and the Sailing Adventure. The Florida Sea Base is always popular.

Jamborees (1973, 1993, 1997, 2001, 2010, 2013, 2017, 2019, 2023) In 1973 the whole troop we traveled to the Jamboree with 85 participants at Moraine State Park in Pennsylvania. We were one of two troops from the Clinton Valley Council. Twenty years later between 1993 and 2001 we returned to the Jamboree and the trip became popular with the Scouts and Adults alike. In 2010 thirty-nine of our Scouts and leaders made the trip to the BSA Centennial Jamboree. In 2013 179 members were among the first to attend the Jamboree at it's new home at the Summit Bechtel Reserve in West Virginia. In 2019 eight-teen of our Scouts and leaders were at the World Jamboree here in the USA.

The National Order of the Arrow Conference (1986, 1988, 1990, 1992, 1994, 1996, 1998, 2004, 2006, 2015, 2018) is a multi-day event which takes place on a university campus east of the Mississippi River, bringing together thousands of delegates from OA lodges around the nation for training and activities. 179 Arrow Members have always been supporters in the Order of the Arrow Program and 179 usually have between 5 to 20 of it's members at NOAC. Our Arrow Members have been to NOAC at Central Michigan University, Colorado State University, Indiana University, University of Tennessee, Purdue University, Iowa State University, and Michigan State University.

The flagship base of Northern Tier, the Charles L Sommers Canoe Base (1995, 2016) has hosted Boy Scout Canoe Expeditions on the shores of Moose Lake since 1941. Located twenty miles, outside of the town of Ely, MN.

The Mackinac Island Service Camp (1972, 1975) in the 70's was only open to troops large enough to meet their needs which included raising and lowering 61 flags daily.

Isle Royale (2003)  is located above Michigan in Lake Superior. It involved a long car ride and a ferry to get there. No cars allowed, just hiking and we circled the island.

Double H High Adventure Base (2004) located on the Plains of San Agustin near Datil, New Mexico, was a satellite program base of the Boy Scouts of America's (BSA) Philmont Scout Ranch from 2004 to 2009. The Double H High Adventure Base was located at the Torstenson Family Wildlife Center, formerly known as the Double H Ranch. The Double H was made possible through a partnership with the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation and the Boy Scouts of America.

Tinnerman Wilderness Canoe Base (2005) located on the banks of the French River, in Ontario, Canada. In the 18th and early 19th centuries, the French River area was a major trade route used to exchange furs trapped in the West with various goods made in the East and in Europe. Owned and operated by the Greater Cleveland Council of the Boy Scouts of America.

Great Smokey Mountain National Park (2007) the Smokies are best known as the home of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, which protects most of the range. The name "Smoky" comes from the natural fog that often hangs over the range and presents as large smoke plumes from a distance. This fog is caused by the vegetation exhaling volatile organic compounds, chemicals that have a high vapor pressure and easily form vapors at normal temperature and pressure. In 2007 members of 179 backpacked 106 miles of trail in this national treasure.

The Upper Missouri River Breaks National Monument (2008) protects the Missouri Breaks of central Montana. The Breaks is a series of badland areas characterized by rock outcroppings, steep bluffs and grassy plains. It encompasses 495,502 acres. The adjacent Missouri River was designated a Wild and Scenic River in 1976 and forms a western boundary while the Charles M. Russell National Wildlife Refuge is to the east. In 2008 members of 179 followed the path of Lewis & Clarke through this beautiful National Monument, canoeing over 100 miles of river through nothing but wilderness.

Troop 179's Great Lakes Sailing Adventure (2009, 2013) is a very popular trip. We start off at the Mouth of the Clinton River in Lake St. Clair and travel south through the Detroit River and into Lake Erie. Stops at Put-In-Bay (home of the squadron of U.S. naval commander Oliver Hazard Perry, who sailed from the port on September 10, 1813 to successfully engage a British squadron just north of the island in the Battle of Lake Erie). Other ports include Kelly's Island and of course everyone favorite, the port of Sandusky at Cedar Point. On the way back to the Clinton River they have also stopped at the Detroit Yacht Club on Belle Isle.

Ohiopyle State Park (2012) in Southern Pennsylvania provided tons of fun. Some of the activities included rock face climbing and rappelling; white water rafting, zip-lines, cave exploring, and mountain biking.

Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore (2014) consist of sandstone cliffs, beaches, sand dunes, waterfalls, lakes, forest, and one of the most beautiful shorelines In the United States. Hiking, camping, sightseeing, and four season outdoor opportunities abound. The lakeshore hugs the Lake Superior shoreline for more than 40 miles. Lake Superior is the largest, deepest, coldest, and most pristine of all the Great Lakes.
